Picked Up a Load of Embarrassment on Aisle 5

I just left Walmart with a great feeling of satisfaction that I didn't let all the free product coupons that I have received from companies go to waste because they expired. But also with hurt feelings and  embarrassment over a situation with my cashier.

After spending time online hunting down free product coupons, then fight crowds and 4 kids to find the items. I finally get in line with one of the 5 checkers and wait patiently for my turn. When the cashier runs vocal point breve creamer coupon and it says expired. She tried it with her register and gun. She looks at the coupon and says it's not expired.  I look at the coupon and it's clearly not. Nor does it look counterfeit. So she gives up and tries to hand me back the coupon and ask if I want her to take it off my bill.  I ask for a CSM and they were able to overwrite it with no problem.

But then as I'm walking away the cashier begins complaining rather loudly about couponers to the people that were behind me in line. I stand there for a minute a little red faced.

Would you complain to a manager about the cashier or go on with your day?

Would you have given up and just paid full price or not bought it at all?

  2. You should most definitely complain! If a cashier wants to go home and complain to there family about their day at work that is one thing. To stand at work and complain within earshot of customer is unacceptable!
    {I was at Wal-mart tonight too! Nothing free but did get great deals on fabric!}

  3. If the coupon was clearly not expired, then I think you did the right thing calling the CSM over and getting your discount. Good for you! Shocked to hear that the cashier was complaining about it! That doesn't seem right. But I would just let it go at that point. You got what you wanted. Good for you!

  4. Returning the visit from #commenthour, and oh my goodness I love your layout! Perfect example of how to use a black background and that header is darling! Anyways, I used to be too timid to complain, but now I try to complain and commend equally. I feel like it is actually telling managers people have done a GOOD job that is not done enough! But yeah... I probably would have said something. How rude.

  5. She was complaining about couponers at Walmart, of all places? You should see the stacks of coupons I take into that store... :) Really, tho, what a hag. The only thing that was malfunctioning was their scanner, not you or your coupon.

  6. I think I would have breathed deeply, thought about what it must be like to be a cashier at WalMart, bless her and move on with my life.

  7. OK, OK, that's what I would have liked to have done. I am not sure I would have been able to!

  8. I just wrote a very long comment, but after hitting "Post Comment," I got a Service 503 error. :( Anyways, what I said in that comment was that I agree with your actions. And, I would have definitely done the same. Most people who don't really value their money, don't get the value of saving money through coupons. I say this as someone who was once one of those people. I paid more for things because I could. I didn't cut coupons or make a "big deal" when the coupons I did cut weren't accepted because it all just seemed so petty to me. Now that I'm a stay at home mom, however, and am more aware and appreciative of the money that I do have, I get it. That rude cashier, like the old me, just doesn't get it. So you'll have to excuse her (and the old me) Plus, she was probably tired and hungry. I would imagine that working at Walmart is tough.

  9. You have absolutely nothing to be embarrased about!!! It's your right to utilize a coupon within it's expiration date and it is the cashier's job to handle the transaction (whatever it may be). I would have definitely complained to the manager about the cashier, her behavior was unacceptable!

  10. I'd complain to the manager, I realize that she has a suck job, but that's no excuse for being rude, plus she could be doing the same thing to other customers.

  11. I see this a lot. I've been in line 100 times at Walgreens or Target and the cashier is loudly complaining to a coworker about their crappy job or how they can't wait to go home. The worst I've seen is CVS where they're loudly discussing very personal things and dogging their manager.

    I say to myself a lot "next time I will tell the manager" and I do deeply feel I should. I'm better at writing letters, though.

    And I'm a nerd, when I write a bad letter, I try to write one good to compliment somebody who did a good job somewhere. I feel it balances my karma or something :)

  12. I had something similar happen a couple months ago. The cashier wasn't able to get the full amount for the coupon to scan so she said she was just going to do the coupon for less. I just looked at her like she had two heads. You know what she said to me? "Are you going to make this a problem?" You had better believe I told the manager and I was only a few steps away from her. Ridiculous! And yes, this was at Walmart, too.
