Thursday Morning Free Writing - I was seduced into thinking...

There are so many things that can influence
the way that we see (or choose to see) the world.

Here are just a few of the influences
that I have witnessed
and what I think of them.

I was seduced by country music songs into this romantic over the top view of marriage - only to find out that it's only as good as you try to make it. I had always imagined that just loving someone was enough - but you need more - you need to invest time and energy into loving that person and you have to be able to put up with them...that's the real secret to marriage.

I was seduced by long standing blog's into thinking that anyone could blog and be good at it - only to find out that it takes a lot of work. Blogging takes a lot more work and dedication that I at first thought. You have to have a good posts, good blog etiquette, time to read other blogs and a thick enough skin that when someone un follows you - you can shake it off enough to get back to your next post. There is also the constant need to steer people into your direction via facebook, twitter and linkys.

I was seduced by weight loss commercials into thinking that if I took this pill or used this piece of equipment that I would lose all the weight that I wanted to only to find out that only exercise and watching what you eat will do that.

I was seduced by diaper commercials and every cute baby I saw into thinking that having a baby is all cute and cuddly (which it sometimes is - only there is also a lot of puke, poop and whining involved.

I was seduced by 24 hour news channels into thinking that there wasn't any good left in the world and while I shudder to think what being made aware of a constant crisis/horror story/death is doing the American psyche - I know that there are still people with good left in their hearts. They are in every corner of the world - only hardly anyone ever mentions them.

I was seduced by credit card companies into thinking that I could have anything that they would allow me to buy - when I really need to think about whether I want/need/or can afford the things I buy.

  4. I agree w/ them all!!! Marriage, kids, blogs & losing weight required hard work!!! (with great benefits too - lol!). As with the news, it's unfortunate, but I don't watch is often anymore b/c it really bums me out. Sometimes I feel like I should know more of what's going on in the world (and that will get to me to turn the news on) but then I get frustrated at how negative they make the world look, that I turn it off again!!!
    Great post!

  9. I like that this is not meant to be a negative post but rather stating the facts. I think quite often, with any endeavor, it's not going to be how we originally thought it would be. Our perceptions are scewed (sp?) and our imaginations are active and the end product is always different.

I look forward to your Thursdays posts. You are brave to write freely.

    Have a fantastic week,
    Teresa

  10. Read your post through my daily emails from you, and I wanted to come by and let you know how much I enjoyed reading it. Very, very good points. I really do think that some divorces are a result of people not feeling satisfied because they thought marriage and love would look the way it does in the movies, books, and songs. Wonder sometimes how I can protect my daughter from doing this!

  11. It's a good thing to recognize. We are seduced everyday. I'm hoping to not get seduced by a pastry shop today, o.k. maybe a little. :D

Very true point about blogging too!

  14. What a great post!! It's amazing how many things in life lead us to believe the outcome will be all rosy and wonderful when instead the grass doesn't stay green for very long. Oh well, at least chocolate tastes delicious no matter what so thank you to all the chocolate in the world for truly having greener grass :)

  15. Ohhhh...I hear you loud and clear. Life has so much constant input & choices & temptations.I guess what I found most is that people do have WILL but they don't necessarily have CONTROL over anyone else but yourselves, and (somewhat)---your kids as you teach them. Marriage, Family, Work, self worth, Health, finances...so much coming at you at once that is it so easy to become disenchanted. All we can do is keep our integrity and follow our values & our hearts. And hope for the best!

I had to laugh at the first 'seduction' note because my 27 year old (who is going through a breakup & has two kids :( ) and I were just talking today about Country music and the funny and cheesy lyrics sometimes. but we love it so anyway!

  16. I agree with you for the most part, but do ponder the possibility that some of the driving factors of our overintoxication with so many of these seductions is perhaps somewhat of a coping mechanism----life just ain't all that easy these days for a whole lot of folks----ya know?

Some times the truth is hard to process.
