Thursday Morning Free Writing - I Can't Breathe in my Mini Van.

The amount of space that a mini van provides for a family of 6 is very very small. When you think of everything that all 6 of those people need from purses, busy activities, drinks and forget about getting groceries...you all better lift up your feet - these veggies gotta go somewhere. But the worst part about the lack of space - the noise level.

I sometimes feel like I am going to go crazy with the constant chatter, fights and laughter that is coming from the peanut gallery.

It's not a pretty sight when an adult has a tantrum (bless your little heart if you have never ever done this - you must be an angel!) but the best way I have found to deal with this constant never ending - at least til they turn into sullen teenagers and wouldn't deem to speak to me or their siblings - barrage of noise is through music.

I love to turn up the tunes in the car and just sing along to my favorite country music artist/90's one hit wonders/or even some kids music.

It just puts everyone into a good mood - and if it doesn't - the white noise of songs that I have heard time and time again can drown out even the loudest of my children.

The problem?

This doesn't work when we have a visitor in the car. They don't know the value of soul music (as in speaking to their souls rather than their Mother) music. But I like to think - they would learn very quickly that the tunes are both necessary for all of our sanity's!

I love glancing in the mirror to catch Miss Maddy carrying a tune along to Taylor Swift or Ace of Base - she even has a little karaoke spirit deep down - if I am lucky enough to be in the passenger seat - I catch little snippets of her singing while she is busting a move with her brothers.

Is it just me? How do you serve your time in the Mom mobile without losing your mind?

  1. I am the same way. My van seems to get very loud too. My kids arguing or laughing over something. I do the same. Cranking up some tunes, to sing along to. Not sure I ever really stay sane, but I try!

  2. I remember my head nearly exploding from the questions they'd ask me in the car. I had to pull out the sing-along action to save my sanity sometimes! I understand completely.

  3. Oh I am getting a Minivan and seriously, I thought it would be quieter because the kids were farther away from my head! Way to burst my bubble! :-(

Yes we use music too, mostly kids (good kids, no Wiggles allowed!) and when they are especially whining, I open all the windows so I can't hear them!

  4. Music is a definite in my car. I hate getting into others' cars where they don't listen to music or they listen to talk radio. There was a time in my life that I listened to talk radio but right now isn't it. Music is my escape. I NEED it.

  5. My kids have headphones to watch a movie in the back while I listen to what I want in front. :)
