Warmables Review

What my kids eat is important to me...With the obesity on the rise across the nation - I knew that it was time to stop running through the drive though and start running around the block.

I was used to letting my kids each lunch at school - that is until this last year when their school made the decision to serve pizza, chicken nuggets and one option daily - DAILY - why even give them the option - they are going to eat pizza or chicken nuggets anyway!

Since watching Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution - I have been giving a lot thought and time to making sure that my kids are eating healthy with me...and without me. I have been packing their lunches for school using a combination of sammies, wraps and smoked sausages. Now that they are out of school - I have day camps, bible school and sports activities to think about. I work part-time during the day - so I am still sending their lunches.

I was so excited when I found out that Warmables was going to send me a kit for the purpose of this review - they were also so gracious to allow me to purchase 3 more (since I have 4 kids) for whole sale.

You see the thing about my kids - they eat - a lot! So when I gave Warmables a try - I was so excited to see that the food container held 16 oz of food and that the lid held tight!

From the Warmables site:

Each set includes:
- The actual WARMABLES pouch, it is the insulator. It’s is made with layers of various cotton and polyester fabrics which are then lined with nylon.

- A BPA-free plastic food storage container. It holds up to 16 oz. of food and does not leak. It is safe to heat and store meals in this container.

- A cherry pit bag; this is an old trick used before the time of modern heating systems;
A bag of cherry pits would be put on a hearth until hot. It was then used to warm cold beds during the winter. In our case it helps to keep your child’s lunch warm.

Here is how it works:
Fill the provided plastic container with food. Heat in microwave. Put the container with its hot contents into the WARMABLES pouch.
Heat the provided cherry pit bag in microwave.
Put it into the WARMABLES pouch along with the food container.
Take the sealed WARMABLES pouch and put it into your child’s INSULATED lunch box.
That is it; you are now ready to start feeding your kids healthier lunches, save money, produce less garbage and feel really great about all of the above. Detailed instructions can be found on our USE & CARE page and will also be sent out with each order.

Purchase your own at www.warmables.com for $27.95 plus $5.70 shipping

This for me was more like a lesson in packing lunches rather than an easy quick fix...I wanted to use this great self contained lunch system as a way to help serve my kids hot lunches while at the same time eliminating food waste (such as leftovers.)

This opens the door to a wider variety of lunches! Love that! My kids can eat healthier lunches if packed with whole grain pastas and proteins and the small container keeps portion size under control.

While their are cons...this is a very helpful product!

I had to re-think the way that I was packing my kid's lunches...since I pack fresh fruits and veggies every day - I need a separate container for those.

I had to figure out how to keep their drinks cold while their lunch was kept hot.

This require a level of planning - I would need to make double batches of the dinners that I cook at night to make sure that their was enough for lunches the next day. This is very specific to my family...since their are 6 of us...we can go through most recipes in the blink of an eye.

Their was a faint unpleasant smell when heating the cherry pits - When asked my kids didn't notice it...so I am thinking as they cool the smell dissipates...it wasn't very strong anyway - and probably only noticed it since I was packing 4 - right in a row.

The verdict: This is a great lunch bag system to help ensure that your kids eat a healthy (as you pack it) lunch that is hot hours after you make it.

I would also like to add...this would be great for adults to take their lunch in too!

I received one Warmables lunch system and 3 others wholesale for the purpose of this review. I was not compensated in any other way. All opinion expressed is mine and mine alone. :)

  2. Wow! So it stays hot?
And BPA free means it does not cause cancer, right? Even when heated?
