Wordless and Wordful Wednesday

I hate to start my post off on a negative note since it's really been a good week...but I need some help!

Anyone know how to set some parental controls on a Direct Tv DVR?

When the kids were Finally asleep last night - Hubby and I sat down to watch LOST -- and only 2 min were recorded.

Kids turned the channel on us.

:( not the first time either. So we will be watching on HULU.com today.

My 2 favorite photos of the week:

My beautiful (he says handsome) son E!

Miss Maddy's long hair. So Pretty.

Since last Wednesday -- we have been taking so many pictures...that I am afraid that I am going to turn some of you away with them...

But I just gotta show ya

Miss Maddy got her ears pierced!!

I am so wishing that I had taken her in as a teeny tiny baby -- cause I swear she is carrying a grudge. She maybe smiling and cute in these photos...but she is still a little wary of me. :( Hope she gets over it soon -- as she and I are spending a ton more time in each others presence....she is potty training -- which means 4 - 6 times (sometimes more) we are stuck together in the tiniest room in the house.

I was chosen for a Spark from My Blog Spark...called Bake Life Sweeter...basically in exchange for a couple Great gifts for me and a giveaway for you ... I need to bake one of my kid's birthday cakes.

OMGosh - I BUY Birthday cakes.

So I thought I would need all the practice that I can get...Night before last - I made a Butterfly cake.

This is going to be a lot harder than I thought...

This is what my cake looked like after the crumb layer -- which is supposed to be a thin layer or frosting to seal in the crumbs. P.S. My crumb layer was 1 1/2 tubs of frosting...but it kept falling apart and you can see that while it was supposed to be a white cake -- it looks a little more like cookies and cream.

But after a little help from my friends on face book (thanks girls) and trial and error I have learned a few things.

1. Freeze your cake for 30 min before frosting it.

2. Heat frosting for about 10 sec - this loosens it and makes it much easier to spread.

3. Don't by the biggest offset spatula you can find...it really needs to be as big as your hand.

4. When your cake is falling apart...more frosting really doesn't help. :)

But in the end...it really did turn out OK.

In the interest of full disclosure... the sides of the cake even after 2nd frosting:

  1. Awwwe your daughter looks so cute with her ears pierced! My daughter will be 3 this summer and I’ve been asking her if she want earring like mommy but she is not going for it yet. I am kicking myself because I should have done it when she was a baby. Oh well.

Oh and the cake looks good! I could never do that!

  2. Love the pictures of the kiddos! Good job on the cake. I had my doubts seeing the first picture, but it turned out great.

We still have to have our children overrride the parental controls on our TV so we can watch movies, so I'd be no help on the first issue!

Sorry I can't help with the TV thing. We have a PVR and there are locks on it but I'm not sure about Direct TV. Lost is really crazy this season!

I totally feel your TiVO pain. I hate when my kids cancel my recordings! UGH! I'm such a TV junkie. Don't mess with my TiVO! :-D

  12. Cakes give me grief too!!!!!! my advice.. don't aim for perfection.. the kids will LOVE it no matter what.

As for Direct TV... get charter. Their version of DVR lets you watch another channel while still recording.. :).

  13. Aww the cake still turned out great. Glad I was able to help a bit on Facebook. :) You have beautiful children. We're holding off piercing our daughter's ears until she can at least be held accountable for taking care of them. I did not take care of mine and the backs got swallowed by my ears. Not a pleasant process to have them taken back out. OUCH!

  14. The kids are adorable! I think we are going to wait on piercing Lily's ears for a few years.

As for the DirectTV DVR, not sure. I have Direct TV. I know I can tape one thing and watch another. If I am taping 2 things the channels can not be changed. (I either have to watch one of the things being taped or something already tivo'd) I have been watching Lost on the ABC website lately. Come to think of it I have been watching lots of shoes on their (ABC/NBC/CBS) websites lately.

The cake turned out great! Thank you for the tips, btw.

  15. The cake looks fantastic!

I have no idea when my daughter (4) will get her ears pierced. She definitely wants nothing to do with it right now, but I'll have to remember to tell her I'll buy her a double scoop when she's done! :)

Lost was so good - how annoying to not be able to watch it when you wanted to. Hope you can figure out those parental controls!

  17. My dogs and cats change channels all the time on me. Drives me crazy. What I often do on my remote which is not for a DVR is switch it off the button that will actually change the channel...i.e. switch from directv to aux1. That works for me.
